About Hidden Hollow Ceramics
Donna Baker-Cayce has been creating functional, one-of-a-kind ceramic art for over thirty years. She received her BFA degree Eastern Michigan University, majoring in ceramics. She lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan for 25 years and enjoyed several years as member of Ann Arbor Potter's guild before moving to Beech Grove, Tenessee in 1992.

Though her Japanese Lanterns, birdbaths, tiles, and cookware may repeat basic forms, the variations in glazes and nuances in the clay give each work a distinctly unique quality.

The ceramic pieces are both wheel thrown and hand-built stoneware fired to cone 6-7 or 2250° in an electric (oxidation) kiln. The clay is a speckled manganese composition that fires to a warm beige color.  Special glaze recipes mixed in her studio are applied by dipping, pouring and spraying. Most of the stamps and tile patterns are made by carving an original from leather hard clay. The stamps are bisque fired (low temperature) and are hard, but porous, and won’t stick to raw clay when pressed. Tiles are cast in plaster to make a press mould that can be used over many times.

"The ceramic process requires an exciting involvement with the elemental as well as the spiritual. It provides me with a vehicle for expression that is challenging, productive, and endlessly varied." -- Donna
